Shot at Aizome Kasuri Kobo ( Fukuoka ) 22/11/2022

Aizome Kasuri Kobo
Founded in 1891, Aizome Kasuri Kobo is a Kurume Kasuri workshop located in Hirokawa, Fukuoka Prefecture. There are two main types of Kurume Kasuri: the indigo dyed, hand woven type, and the chemical dyed, machine woven type. Even amongst weavers that use indigo dye and hand weaving methods, Aizome Kasuri Kobo places particular emphasis on valuing traditional methods. The workshop creates beautiful gradations in the indigo’s color by dyeing pieces over and over, sometimes more than 50 times. They also design geometric patterns through interpretations of traditional motifs, creating pieces with a charm unique to Aizome Kasuri Kobo.

Artist. Tokolo Asao was born in Tokyo in 1969. He studied architecture since his childhood under Egashira Shin, and began to create patterns on September 11, 2001. Under the theme of “connecting,” he continues to work across the boundaries of art, architecture, design, and other fields. He also designs and produces three-dimensional objects based on the same principle. Major works include emblems for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a glass pattern for the Dainagoya Building’s lower level, the Tokolo Pattern Magnet, etc. In addition, he has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Engineering since 2016, and at the University of Tokyo’s College of Liberal Arts since 2018

Akihiko Izukura (A Japanese master of dyeing and weaving)
Izukura, a Japanese master of dyeing and weaving, works primarily in silk by transforming thread into “wind-like” fabrics. He also creates a wide range of functional and brilliant modern garments with traditional weaving and knitting techniques. He hand dyes silk with subtle colors made only from natural materials, such as madder, persimmon and chestnut, following a process that is over 2000 years old. Many of his works and outfits have been exhibited in New York, Vienna and Copenhagen.

Akira Kihora At Tataraba / The Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (NBTHK) 17/05/2023

The tatara (鑪) is a traditional Japanese furnace used for smelting iron and steel. The word later also came to mean the entire building housing the furnace. The traditional steel in Japan comes from ironsand processed in a special way, called the tatara system Akihiko Kihara is a mastar of Tatara and the head(calle “Murage in Japanese”) of NBTHK tatara.
